The Nature of Membership

The Swiss LSE Alumni Association is a Swiss corporation established in 1998 under federal law. As a Member of the Association, you are a member of the corporation. Members of the Association reside in all 26 cantons of the Confederation and the near and far abroad. Members of the Association also contribute to the LSE Alumnae and Alumni Foundation of Switzerland, a separate national scholarship foundation supervised by the Swiss Federal Government. We are confident that you will find membership in one of the oldest, largest and most active national associations of LSE alumnae and alumni worldwide an excellent proposition.

You start your membership by applying ("Beitritt") and end your membership by resigning ("Austritt").

As a Member, you acquire by law a number of membership rights and obligations. All Members of the Association also have unrestricted access to all activities, events, benefits and services. By ending your membership, you loose all membership rights, terminate all membership obligations (but for the duty to have paid all of your dues in full) and end access to activities, events, benefits and services. The membership dues are a nominal CHF 40 for each year of membership.

Membership rights ("Mitgliedschaftsrechte"):   Membership obligations ("Mitgliedschaftspflichten"):
  • the right to vote ("Stimm- und Wahlrecht")
  • rights ancillary to the former, i.e. to be invited to General Meetings, to be able to offer order-of-business items, to be allowed entry into General Meetings, to be allowed to speak and to be allowed to submit motions)
  • property rights ("Vermögensrechte")
  • protective rights ("Schutzrechte"), both written (e.g. the right to exit our Association at the end of each calendar year with 6 months advance notice) and unwritten (e.g. the right to information)
  • right to equal treatment (an important constitutional right)
  • right to appeal ("Anfrechtungsrecht")
  • ...

  • dues payment obligation ("Beitragspflicht")
  • fiduciary duties ("Treuepflichten"), e.g. members have an obligation not to do anything which would be contrary to the interests of the Association
  • sanctions under private law ("Vereinsstrafen"), such as late payment fees
  • obligation to cooperate ("Mitwirkungspflicht")
